Instructor: Lydia Pebly

Lydia is an educator, thinker, and creator with a deep love of words. Lydia is an uninvited guest on the lands of the Susquehannock people in the Laurel Run-Susquehanna River watershed on Turtle Island, commonly known as Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

She currently teaches high school English to slightly less-than-enthusiastic readers and writers.

When not immersed in the literary world, Lydia enjoys knitting socks, painting and drawing, warding off attacks from her clingy feline, and pretending she’s on the Great British Baking Show.

She has experience tutoring and collaborating with a wide range of authors with diverse texts, including creative writing, professional writing, and academic writing.

Do you love words and books so much that you’d kill to read them? Liesel
Meminger doesn’t, but she certainly steals and breaks the law to read! Living in Nazi
Germany with her foster parents, Liesel navigates relationships, grief, and matters of
conscience through the written word. Narrated by Death, this book explores the power of
words, kindness, and the courage to stand up for your beliefs.

Each week, participants will have group-guided discussions on the week’s reading.
Students will direct the conversation with their own thoughts and questions about the
book. Students will also have the option to share short writing assignments inspired by the
book with the rest of the class. At the end of the class, students’ writing samples will be
compiled into a portfolio.
