Traditional vs. Hybrid Publishing. What’s the difference?

January 18, 2022

I bet you are wondering the difference between Wild Ink Publishing and W.I.P. Press. Or maybe you wonder about hybrid publishing. Is W.I.P. a vanity press? The short answer is, no. But I wanted to take a moment to talk about it. Because you have choices.

Wild Ink Publishing is the traditional publishing side of the company. An author pays nothing to be published and gets part of the net revenue from sales of their book. The Wild Ink Team does everything for you. It is competitive to be published under Wild Ink Publishing, we simply cannot accept every manuscript. Be prepared with a query letter, synopsis, and the first 10,000 words of your book for review.

W.I.P. Press is our hybrid imprint. Hybrid is different from vanity in that, if you choose to pursue publishing with W.I.P. you will be treated the same as our Wild Ink authors. You get all the same benefits, including project coordination, editing, proofreading, layout, design, and marketing. You retain more creative control and get more royalties. But you, the author, pay upfront. This is different from vanity publishing in that, we don’t forget about you once your book is published. We will continue to support you. This path is less competitive than traditional, but that doesn’t mean everyone will be accepted. This means you still have to query with a letter, synopsis, and the first 10,000 words of your book.

W.I.P Press also offers Assisted Self-Publishing. This option is for those who know they want to self-publish, but the idea of searching for, and coordinating with, editors, proofreaders, designers, and layout artists is overwhelming. We do all the work for you, while you remain in complete creative control of your project. Once we are finished with your files, we will hand them over to you, and cheer for you as you load your project for publication (which we can coach you through).

Note: In all publishing paths, will not accept any manuscript that includes hate speech.
